Little Joe and the Big Rain by Mike Darcy

Review by Angie Carlson

Little Joe and Big Rain is a delightful and heartwarming tale that invites young readers on an exciting journey through fields, forests, and friendship. With its beautifully crafted setting—an old farmhouse nestled in the countryside—this story exudes a classic charm that draws readers into a world of exploration and unexpected experiences.

Unlike a traditional picture book, Little Joe (and likely the rest of the series) comes in a storybook format with pages filled with prose while illustrated pages are scattered throughout. This book will do best read aloud to early elementary school ages or used as an early reader book for later elementary grades to read on their own.

Little Joe, the lovable pup with floppy ears and a big heart, is a perfect companion for young imaginations. His enthusiastic curiosity and joyful energy are both relatable and aspirational for kids, encouraging them to explore their world with wonder and kindness. Through encounters with new friends like Hopper the frog and Roxy the bear, children learn about bravery, empathy, and how even the smallest among us can make a big difference.

The book weaves in themes of compassion, helping others, and overcoming fear. Hopper’s clever thinking when faced with danger and Little Joe’s eagerness to help, shows children that bravery often comes in quiet, thoughtful actions. Parents reading this aloud will find plenty of opportunities to pause and discuss emotions, choices, and “what would you do” moments with their children.

For teachers, Little Joe and The Big Rain offers various classroom potential, including reading aloud with children playing different characters. The descriptive language and layered story structure makes it a great option to explore story themes, character development, and sensory language as part of ELA core learning.

While longer in prose than a traditional picture book, this story is a cute welcome into Little Joe’s world—filled with warmth, humor, and heart. The storybook format invites young readers to turn away from screens, listen closely, and sharpen their imaginations as they join Joe on his journey through the forest’s natural surprises. Whether read at bedtime, in the classroom, or curled up on a rainy afternoon, Little Joe and the Big Rain is sure to delight kids and grown-ups alike.
